Introduction
Atta Kwami is a Ghanaian artist and painter.
Biography
Early life and education
Kwami was boron in 1956 in Accra, Ghana.
From 1976 to 1980, he studied painting and art at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology in the Kumasi city of Ashanti Region in Ghana.
In 1992 he received an M.Phil degree in African Art. In 1993, he also studied in London at Chelsea College of Arts and The London Institute.
He is an eclectic artist; his work ranges widely between the various disciplines of art. His artwork, often abstract, is full vibrant colors that draw on a rich heritage of visual culture in Kumasi. The starting point of his reflection is often the environment, especially that of commercial areas like Atonsu Agogo.
Career
Kwami lives and works in Kumasi, where he received his education. In 1986, he became a teacher at his former college, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology.
He is currently the director of the department of painting and sculpture at the university.
Kwami is frequently invited to give lectures at various universities and other art institutions in the UK and Africa.
In December 2013, he published a book, "Kumasi Realism," which featured various Kumasi-based artists such as Alex Amofa , and Isaac Otchere Azey, and Isumaila Moro
