Thomas Eagleton

Thomas Eagleton was an American politician and lawyer who served as a United States Senator from Missouri. He was also the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee in the 1972 presidential election.

Eagleton was known as a progressive and liberal politician. He was an advocate for civil rights and was one of the first senators to support President Lyndon B. Johnson's Voting Rights Act. Eagleton was also a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and sought to end the conflict as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Thomas Eagleton faced controversy and scrutiny after it was revealed that he had previously received electric shock treatment for depression. This revelation led to concerns about his mental health and ability to serve in office. Eagleton later withdrew from the race in what is known as one of the most famous instances of political withdrawal in American history.

Following Eagleton's withdrawal, the Democratic Party quickly selected Sargent Shriver as the new vice presidential candidate. However, the damage had already been done, and the controversy surrounding Eagleton's withdrawal contributed to an already challenging campaign for Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern. Ultimately, the Democratic ticket was unsuccessful as Richard Nixon was re-elected as President.
