Introduction

Simon Joseph Simon-Auguste (20 April 1909 – 1987) was a French artist, known for his intimate paintings, principally portraits, nudes and still lifes. His production was limited and is characterized by a calm, intimate feel and the effective use of glaze.

Biography

Simon Simon-Auguste was born in Marseille in 1909, son of a cabinet-maker. He began working young in a ceramic factory, taking night classes at the Marseille school of fine arts. He moved to Paris in 1939 and presented his work at the Salon d'Automne, Salons des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps, and other major exhibitions.

He died in 1987.

Works

Simon Simon-Auguste is best known for his interior scenes and his nudes. He also produced a number of works on the subject of childhood. He produced a noted portrait of French writer and critic Paul Léautaud.
