Introduction
Dr. Roberto M. Rosende (born 1936) is an American philatelist, an expert in the philately of Cuba.
He was added to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1985. On May 13, 1992, he received Alfred F. LichtensteinMemorial Award.
Early life and education
Rosende was born in 1936 in Cuba. Becoming a philatelist at the age of 12, he joined the Club Filatelico de la Republica de Cuba as a junior and was elected its secretary in 1958. He was editor of the official publication Actividades Filatelicas from January 1960 through June 1963, Nos. 60 to 110. He was also the Club representative at the Philatelic Department at the Cuban Post Office. He emigrated to the United States in 1964.
Rosende holds medical degrees from the University of Havana, Cuba, and the University of Madrid, Spain.
Career
Rosende has been the chairman of both The Philatelic Foundation and its Expert Committee, secretary of The Collectors Club in New York, chairman of the A.P.S. Commissioners' Committee, director of COPO (Council of Philatelic Organizations), and co-chairman of PhiLITex 92 (the first international philatelic literature exhibition in North America). He also has prepared the Collectors Club's Program of Events for the last four years, including its annual competition.
In the past, he has been president of the Inter-American Federation of Philately, president of the Postal History Society, president of the Cuban Philatelic Society of America, trustee of The Philatelic Foundation, and governor of The Collector's Club.
In addition, Rosende is a member of the Expert Committee of the American Philatelic Society and the Association Internationale des Experts Philateliques (A.I.E.P.) of Switzerland. He is also an accredited judge for the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (F.l.P.) and the A.P.S., having served more than 40 times since 1978, including 18 international shows.
He has been secretary of the jury at BUENOS AIRES '80 (F.l.P.), BRASILIANA '83 (F.l.P.), and AMERIPEX '86 (F.l.P.). He has also been the U.S. commissioner to more than 10 international shows, including ESPANA '75, CAPEX '78, and LONDON '80.
Before retiring in 1991, Rosende was an associate in neurosurgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and department head at Montefiore Medical Center, both in New York.
Personal life
Rosende resides in Yonkers, New York, with his wife Mercedes. They have two children.
