Raj Dutt
Introduction
Birendra "Raj" Dutt is an Indian-American scientist, entrepreneur, founder of APIC Corporation and developer of Fully Laser Integrated Photonics (FLIP).
Education
In 1971, Raj Dutt graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur with a degree in aeronautical engineering and in 1976 got his Ph.D. in experimental fluid mechanics from the University of Southern California, after defending a thesis at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. He then continued studying linear physics of solitons and worked as a postdoctoral fellow for one year at the University of Southern California until he earned MS from Virginia Tech.
Career
In 1999 he founded APIC Corporation whose goal is to research, develop and produce highly integrated photonics and electronics. With the offices in Honolulu, Hawaii and Culver City, California, and sponsorship from the Air Division of the Naval Air Systems Command, the NSA and the United States Department of Defense, the company of his managed to develop germanium that is capable of producing a laser when charged with electricity. The work was conducted by Raj and colleagues from MIT and Stanford University and was published in The Economic Times.
