Introduction
Mary Elizabeth (Aikin) Brooks (November 16, 1803 – February 27, 1895) was an American poet who sometimes published under the pen name "Norna."
Aikin was born in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1803 and was educated at the Troy Female Seminary.In 1829, Aikin married newspaper editor James G. Brooks, who had written poetry under the name "Florio."Later that year, the couple published a collection of their poems entitled The Rivals of Este: and Other Poems. Aikin had previously published her poems under the pen name "Norna."
After her husband died in 1841 following a long illness, Mary E. Brooks continued publishing her poetry and other writings in newspapers and journals.She and her husband had a daughter, Constantina E. Brooks, also a poet, whom Mary lived with in later years.Mary E. Brooks died in 1895 in Albany, New York.
