Biography

Ormani was an Italian Augustinian nun and manuscript illustrator. She was probably the daughter of a Sieneze bronzeworker and descended from an aristocratic Tuscan family.

Her most notable work was a self-portrait in a brevery she illuminated in 1453. Her image is framed by a scroll, describing her as "handmaid of God, daughter of Orman, and the writer of the book." This portrait differs from other Florentine women's portraits of the time in its frontal pose and direct "self-possessed" gaze.
