Introduction
Jonathan V. Last (born 1974) is an American journalist, author and podcaster. He is the executive editor at the American conservative news and opinion website, The Bulwark. Previously, he was the digital editor at The Weekly Standard.
He articles have included data-driven analyses of demographic trends on such topics as the American birth rate, the voting patterns of the rising number of single Americans, and the collapsing fertility rates in Korea
Early life and education
Last was born in 1974, in Camden, New Jersey and grew up in Woodbury and Moorestown Township, New Jersey. He attended The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, in the years 1962-1996, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Molecular Biology.
Career
Journalism
Last has been a regular columnist for numerous well-known publications including Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, the New York Post, Salon, the Washington Times, Slate, the New York Press, First Things, the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Daily.
In July 2001, he joined The Weekly Standard as an online editor. He remained with The Weekly Standard until the publication folded in December 2018. Over the years, he was promoted to Staff Writer, Senior Writer, and eventually to Digital Editor in June 2017.
After leaving The Weekly Standard, he became the executive editor at The Bulwark, an American conservative news and opinion website.
Podcast
Last, along with Victorino Matus, and Sonny Bunch, produces a weekly podcast, titled The Sub-Beacon Podcast - the topics range from movies to pop culture.
Author
Last has so far authored and co-authored six books. He published his first book, titled " What to Expect When No One’s Expecting," in January 2013. The book contains a detailed examination of the origins and consequences of these and related trends.
