

Jeffrey Jowell
Sir Jeffrey Jowell QC (Hon) is a practicing barrister specialising in constitutional (including advice on national constitutions), administrative and public, and Human rights law at Blackstone Chambers. He was the inaugural Director of the Bingham Centre on the Rule of Law from 2010 until 2015.In 2011 he was knighted Knight Commander of The Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (KCMG) for services to human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. In 2012 he was listed one of The Time's 100 most influential lawyers. He is Emeritus Professor of Public Law at University College London where he was previously Dean of the Law Faculty, Head of the Law Department and Vice Provost variously.
Jeffrey has had a number of public appointments including having been a Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution; Chair of the British Waterways Ombudsman Committee, Chair of the Council of the Institute for Philanthropy; Non-Executive Director of the Office of Rail Regulation; and Trustee of a number of charities. Between 2000 - 2011 he was the UK's member of the Council of Europe's commission for Democracy through Law (also known as "The Venice Commission").
In 2016 he was awarded the National Order of the Southern Cross by the Brazilian President, Michel Temer, for his contribution to constitutionalism and the rule of law internationally.
Jeffrey holds honorary degrees from a number of universities including Athens, UCL, Ritsumeikan, Cape Town and Paris 2.
He is a Bencher of Middle Temple.
