Introduction

James H. Stuart (born 1934) is a Canadian politician. He was the mayor of Kelowna, British Columbia from 1986 to 1996.

Early life

James H. Stuart, or Jim, was born in 1945 in Kelowna, British Columbia. He grew up in Kelowna area.

Career

Stuart was first elected to public office in 1967, and served on the Board of the Regional District of Central Okanagan for 29 years including 15 years as Chairman.

In 1973 he entered municipal politics and was elected to the City of Kelowna Council. In 1986 he ran for Mayor of Kelowna and won. He held the position for 10 years, until 1996.

In addition, he served on the Central Okanagan Regional Hospital Board for 29 years and the Kelowna General Hospital Board for 11 years. He was an executive member of the Municipal Finance Authority for 17 years, of which 12 were as chairman. He was also appointed to the B.C. Transit Authority for five years and served a one-year appointment to the Financial Institutions Commission.

Personal life

Jim is married. He has three children and the family lives in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Honor

In 1996, the City of Kelowna created a new waterfront park "Stuart Park" in Stuart's honor. The park includes an outdoor ice rink and is designed to create a focal point for the City’s civic and Cultural District and provide environmental and fisheries benefits for the 300 metres of downtown waterfront.
