Introduction

Ivor is an English masculine given name derived from Old Norse Ívarr (modern Scandinavian Ivar). The Old Norse name was also adopted in Gaelic-speaking Ireland and Scotland, in the spelling Ímar (modern Iomhar). It was also adopted in Wales in the spelling Ifor. It is derived from the Old Norse elements yŕ (yew, bow) and herr (warrior, army): hence, "archer, bow warrior."
