Horatio Wright

Horatio Wright was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War. He is best known for his actions as a corps commander in the Battle of Cedar Creek, where his leadership helped turn the tide of the battle in favor of the Union.

Horatio Wright was born on March 6, 1820, in Clinton, Connecticut. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1841 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.

During the American Civil War, Horatio Wright served in various positions of command. He played a key role in the Peninsula Campaign and later led the VI Corps during the Siege of Petersburg. He also served as the commander of the Department of Texas following the war.

During the Battle of Cedar Creek in 1864, Horatio Wright's VI Corps was initially caught off guard and forced to retreat. However, Wright quickly reorganized his forces and launched a counterattack, which helped to turn the tide of the battle in favor of the Union.

After the Civil War, Horatio Wright continued to serve in the United States Army. He was promoted to the rank of major general in 1866 and served as the chief of engineers for the Army Corps of Engineers. He retired from active service in 1879 and passed away on July 2, 1899.
