Introduction

Erwin Charles Stumm (September 15, 1908 — April 24, 1969) was an American geologist, paleontologist, museum curator, and educator. He was Professor of Geology and Mineralogy and Curator of Paleozoic Invertebrates in the Museum of Paleontology at the University of Michigan.

Early life and education

Stumm was born on September 15, 1908, in Berkeley, California, to Ernest and Augusta Stumm. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1932 and 1933, respectively. He then obtained his Ph.D. in Geology from Princeton University, New Jersey, in 1936.

Career

After finishing his higher education, Stumm worked for the US Department of Agriculture and then the US Geological Survey. From 1937 to 1947, he taught geology at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. In 1947, he joined the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, as Assistant Professor of Geology and Associate Curator in the Museums. Over the next ten years, he was promoted to Curator and full Professor.

After 1956, Stumm served as editor of the professional journal of the Paleontological Society, and during 1966-67, he was President of that Society. He was also a member of the Ohio and Michigan Academies of Science.

Stumm was an expert on coral fossils and on the paleozoic paleontology and stratigraphy of the Great Lakes region. He also studied the Devonian trilobites. As an applied geologist, he also worked for the oil industry and the cement industry.

Personal life

Stumm married Mary Elizabeth Coon on August 29, 1936.

Death

Stumm died on April 24, 1969, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the age of 60.
