Biography

Cinderella Jane Simon (1902 – 13 February 1981) was an Australian Aboriginal activist.

Born in Taree to a Biripi mother, she attended school in Purfleet, New South Wales and learned a lot about her culture from her maternal grandmother Kundaibark (died 1932). She and her husband Joseph Simon worked travelling as evangelists. She later became the secretary of the newly formed United Aborigines Mission at Purfleet, and founded the Country Women's Association's local branch. In 1962, she became the first Aboriginal Justice of the Peace in Australia. She later returned to Taree, where she died in 1981. In 1978, she wrote an autobiography, Through My Eyes; further editions were published in 1987 and 1995.
