Biography

A copper engraving of Widmer's head by Matthias Stumpf.

Dorothea Widmer (1758 - 1781), was a Swiss convicted murderer.

She murdered her husband, an alcoholic who had subjected her to habitual spousal abuse, together with her accomplice Bartholome Gubler. She and Gubler where both condemned to death. Her execution was postponed because of pregnancy, but performed 29 August in Zürich. The case attracted great attention and became famous in contemporary Switzerland, as Widmer was met with great public sympathy because of her youth, beauty and the longstanding abuse as the reason for her murder, and she was compared with Beatrice Cenci and became the subject of poems and inscriptions.
