Introduction

Daniel Graves (born 1949) is an American oil painter and etcher living in Florence, Italy, since 1978. He specializes in landscapes, figurative subjects, and portraits. He is the director of the Florence Academy of Art, Florence, Italy, which he founded in 1991.

Life, education, career

Graves was born in 1949 in Rochester, New York. He graduated Cum Laude from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland, in 1972, where he studied under Joseph Sheppard and Frank Russell. While at the college, he learned the rapid painting technique used by Jacques Maroger. He then continued his studies at the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Art in Florence, Italy, with Richard Serrin (1972-73). Following a course of training with Richard Lack in Minneapolis, Minnesota, (1975-76) he taught at the Atelier Lack Studio of Fine Art.

In 1978, Graves returned to Florence and undertook individual study with Nerina Simi, who maintained a classical nineteenth-century studio. Simi was the daughter of the Florentine painter Filadelfo Simi, who had studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme, the head of the French Academy in Paris in the 1870s. As an artist living in Florence, Graves also associated with and was influenced by Pietro Annigoni

Graves partnered with Charles Cecil to found Studio Cecil-Graves in Florence, where for many years he trained several practitioners of classical realism (1984-1991). He then established The Florence Academy of Art in 1991. The Florence Academy of Art has been at the forefront of classical realist art education for more than twenty years. In April 2008, Graves and The Florence Academy of Art received the Excellence in Art Education Award from the Portrait Society of America.
