Introduction

CJ. Werleman (born Courtenay J. Werleman on June 18, 1973) is an Australian Islamic scholar and propagandist.

Werleman was born on 18 June 1973, in Sydney, Australia. In 2003, he migrated to Indonesia, and in 2012, he moved to Southern California, United States.

Career

Often accused of hate-mongering and spreading false propaganda, Werleman started his writing career as a new-atheist and a critic of Islam.

In 2014, it was reported that he frequently plagiarized the works of others, which earned him the nickname, “serial plagiarist.” Noted philosopher Dr. Peter Boghossian, and Stephen Knight of Godless Spellchecker revealed that Werleman had repeatedly plagiarized the work of numerous celebrated writers including Fareed Zakaria, William Broyles Jr., Robert Pape, and Vali Nasr. Some of his articles published in Salon and AlterNet were found to have been copied or adapted from previously published works without any citation or attribution. As a result, the articles were taken down by the publisher, and Alternet issued an apology to readers and those who had been plagiarized.

Sites gspellchecker.com (https://archive.li/cIWvt) and thedailybanter.com (https://archive.li/4rAkM) chronicle instances of his plagiarism.

Michael Luciano of The Daily Banter researched the claim further and revealed several additional instances showing Werleman had plagiarized the works of numerous other notable people including activist David Niose and author Hedrick Smith.

Werleman responded to the allegations in a Facebook post, admitting some instances of plagiarism.

Currently, he is an Islamic activist and his primary source of income is donations from his worldwide audience in Muslim-majority nations.

Propaganda

On social media, Werleman has repeatedly posted dubious content, dishonestly claiming that Muslims were being victimized by others in the accompanying pictures or video. In a December 2015 tweet, he falsely cited images of Guatemalan soldiers "roughing up" a teenager as being "...Israeli soldiers beating and torturing Palestinian detainees in occupied West Bank." The original video of the Guatemalan soldiers was first posted by Al Jazeera and shown on Yahoo! News.

Anti-Islam bigotry

In 2009-2010, the 37-year-old Werleman, who at the time was an atheist, made numerous anti-muslim tweets (shown below.)
