Charles Hapgood

Charles Hapgood was an American college professor and author known for his theories about Earth's crustal displacement. He proposed that the Earth's lithosphere shifts horizontally, causing the continents to move over geological time periods.

Hapgood argued that ancient maps, such as the Piri Reis map, showed accurate depictions of coastlines that were unrecognizable during the time they were created. He also analyzed geological and paleontological data, suggesting that certain anomalies could be explained by crustal displacement.

The Piri Reis map is a famous world map created by the Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis in 1513. Hapgood used this map as evidence for his theory because it allegedly showed the accurate details of Antarctica's coastline, a landmass which had not been officially discovered at the time.

Hapgood's theory of Earth crustal displacement was initially met with some interest, but it ultimately did not gain widespread acceptance within the scientific community. Most geologists and Earth scientists dismissed his ideas due to a lack of concrete evidence and the inability to explain the mechanism behind the proposed displacement.

In addition to his theories on Earth crustal displacement, Hapgood wrote several books on varied topics. Notable works include "Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings," "Mystery in Acambaro," and "The Path of the Pole." While these works did not gain mainstream acceptance, they still hold a place in alternative historical and archaeological theories.
