Introduction

Arthur Venis CIE was a British educator and Sanskrit scholar. He was also a Member of the Legislative Council of the United Province.

Career

Venis studied in Balliol College, Oxford and passed with an MA from the University of Edinburgh. He joined service in the Indian Educational Department and started his teaching career as Professor of English, Queen's College, Varanasi in 1881. In 1885 Venis was appointed as the principal of Government Sanskrit College, Varanasi. In 1888, he became Principal, Queen's College. In 1897, Venis received Boden Scholarship. He also taught post Vedic Sanskrit in Allahabad University and became a fellow of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. He received the CIE in the 1911 Delhi Durbar Honours and was a Member of the Legislative Council of the United Province.
