Abner Read

Abner Read was an officer in the United States Navy who served during World War II. He is best known for his actions during the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, where he commanded the USS Abner Read.

The USS Abner Read was a Fletcher-class destroyer that saw action in World War II. It was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Abner Read, who was killed during the Battle of Guadalcanal. The ship was launched in 1943 and participated in numerous operations in the Pacific.

During the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, the USS Abner Read was part of a task force that encountered a Japanese fleet. In the ensuing battle, the Abner Read was hit by a Japanese torpedo. Despite the severe damage, the crew managed to stabilize the ship and prevent it from sinking. The Abner Read was later towed back to port for repairs.

For his leadership and courage during the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, Abner Read was awarded the Navy Cross, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Navy for valor in combat. He was also posthumously awarded the Purple Heart for being killed in action.
