Biography

Nigel Osborne MBE, FRCM (born 23 June 1948) is a British composer. He served as Reid Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh and has also taught at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.
Osborne was born in Manchester, England, to Scottish parents. He studied composition with Kenneth Leighton (his predecessor as Reid Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh), Egon Wellesz (the first pupil of Arnold Schoenberg), and Witold Rudziński. He also studied at the Polish Radio Experimental Studio in Warsaw. His compositions include the opera The Electrification of the Soviet Union, a concerto for flute and chamber orchestra, I am Goya and Remembering Esenin.
