Introduction

Marcel Fortuna (born October 22, 1985) is a Brazilian mixed martial artist who competes in the Light Heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Background

Born and raised in Brazil, Fortuna began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the age of 16, and went on to have an accomplished career in the sport. As a brown belt, Fortuna was a world champion, and won the South American, European, and Pan-American championships as a black belt.

Mixed martial arts career

Early career

Fortuna made his professional debut in 2011, winning via first-round armbar. He then went on to compile a record of 8-1 on the California regional circuit, with the loss being at the hands of former UFC veteran Jesse Taylor.

The Ultimate Fighter

Fortuna appeared on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Joanna vs. Team Cláudia, and faced Cory Hendricks in the preliminary elimination bout to get into the house and make the final cast. He lost via unanimous decision.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Fortuna was later signed by the UFC and made his debut at UFC Fight Night: Bermudez vs. Korean Zombie in a Heavyweight bout against Anthony Hamilton. Despite being very undersized, Fortuna won via knockout with an overhand right in the first round. He also won Performance of the Night honors.

Fortuna is expected to face Jordan Johnson on July 7, 2017 at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale.
