Introduction
Mara Keisling (born September 29, 1959 in Scranton, Pennsylvania) is an American transgender rights activist and founding executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, based in Washington, DC. She is a trans woman who started transitioning in her 40s. A couple of years later, Keisling created the National Center for Transgender Equality to advocate for transgender rights in the United States.
Early life and education
One of seven siblings, Keisling grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her father was the governor's chief of staff. She attended Penn State University.
Career
National Center for Transgender Equality
Keisling founded the National Center for Transgender Equality in 2003. During her time as Executive Director, the center has contributed to efforts that have resulted for numerous victories for the transgender equality movement, including the first congressional hearing related to the issues faced by transgender individuals, the passage of "transgender-inclusive federal legislation", and a revision of the State Department protocol for changing one's gender marker on their passport. Keisling offers commentary on transgender issues, appearing on news channels such as CNN and C-SPAN, and offering quotes for newspapers including The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Keisling works towards the goal of transgender equality through lobbying, public education, and building coalitions with other progressive organizations and causes.
