Introduction

Louis Frederick Casavant (20 December 1868 - 20 February 1936) was an American bass vocalist of Broadway operas and operettas. He was active in 1890—1934, appearing in such original Broadway productions as Foxy Quiller (In Corsica)(1900), The Rose of Alhambra (1907), The Red Rose (1911), The Saint (1924), Woof, Woof (1929-1930), and Colonel Satan(1931.) His name was often misspelled in credits and news articles as "Cassavant."

Life and career

Casavant was born on December 20, 1868, in Jerseyville, Illinois, to Louis Jacob Casavant (1840–1875) and Mina C. Bertman Buesen (1848–1907.)

In 1890, he played "Will Scarlet" in the first production of Robin Hood — a comic opera by Reginald DeKovenHarry Bache Smith, and Clement Scott ("Oh Promise Me"), produced by The Ideal Opera Company (also known as the Bostonians,) at the Chicago Opera House, June 9th, 1890 to June 15th, 1890.

In 1895, Casavant was seen in Frank Daniels Opera Company's The Wizard of the Nile (Libretto by Harry B. Smith; Music by Victor Herbert; Musical Director: Frank Palma), at Casino Theatre, New York. 

In 1900, he played "Abel Gudgeon" alongside W. G. Stewart (as Ned Royster), Adolph Zink (as Kimono), Jerome Sykes (as Foxy Quiller), Harry Macdonough (as Walsingham Binks), and Georgia Caine (as Polly Prime), in Marc Klaw and Abraham Lincoln Erlanger's Opera Company's Foxy Quiller (In Corsica) (Music by Reginald De Koven; Libretto by Harry B. Smith; Musical Director: Antonio DeNovellis).

His other popular appearances were The Rose of Alhambra (1907), The Red Rose (1911), The Saint (1924), Woof, Woof(1929-1930), and Colonel Satan (1931.)

Personal life

Casavant was married to Greta Risley, also an actress who was Casavant's co-star in Robin Hood.

Death

Casavant died on February 20, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 67. He is buried at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
