Introduction
Leslie Brubaker is an expert in Byzantine illustrated manuscripts and was appointed the Professor of Byzantine Art at the University of Birmingham in 2005. Her research interests included female patronage, icons and the cult of the Virgin Mary.
Education
She did her first degree and masters at Pennsylvania State University. She then did a doctorate at Johns Hopkins University while working as an instructor at Wheaton College.
She moved to the UK in 1994, taking up a position as lecturer in Byzantine studies at Birmingham University, where she arranged to share the position with Dr Ruth Macrides, so enabling both women to do research and "have a life".
Her husband is Christopher Wickham.
