Introduction
Kelly Reno (born 19 June 1966) is a former child actor who was cast at age 11 in the role of "Alec Ramsey," the young boy who is marooned on a deserted island along with a horse, in The Black Stallion (based on the novel by Walter Farley).
Life and career
Kelly Reno was born on June 19, 1966, in Pueblo, Colorado, to cattle ranchers Bud and Ruth Reno. He had been riding horses since his childhood and the experience qualified him for the role of "Alec Ramsey" in Carroll Ballard's 1979 film The Black Stallion, alongside Mickey Rooney and Teri Garr. Both of his parents accompanied him during the filming of the movie. In 1983, he reprised the role in the film's sequel The Black Stallion Returns, with Vincent Spano and Allen Garfield (directed by Robert Dalva).
Also in 1983, he starred as "Miki" in Pál Gábor's Brady's Escape.
Reno graduated from high school in 1984.
In 1985, he was seen in the title role of the "Alamo Jobe" episode of Steven Spielberg's TV series Amazing Stories. He plays the character of an Alamo messenger, "Jobe H. Farnum," who travels through time, transported forward to San Antonio in 1985.
Amazing Stories was Reno's last screen appearance — his acting career was cut short due to a serious auto accident in June 1985 in Pueblo, Colorado. According to the police, Reno's pickup truck was northbound in the right-hand lane on Interstate 25, attempting to pass two semi trucks in the left northbound lane, when the accident occurred. "He lost control, skidded into the median, rolled 2 1/2 times and both occupants in the truck were thrown out." Reno had severe injuries and the long recovery time put an end to his acting career.
After 20 years as a cattle rancher, he became a certified truck driver.
Television appearances
In 1980, Reno appeared in a June episode of The Mike Douglas Show, alongside Jack Klugman, Burt Young, and Gloria Loring.
In May 1983, he was a guest on an episode of The Merv Griffin Show, alongside Lois Lee, Douglas Adams, and Patrick Macnee.
Personal life
Reno married three times. His first marriage with Lynette Tuttle from 1986 to 1996 ended in divorce. They had three children: Ryan (born 1989), Raelyn (born 1993), and Justin (born 1994). He was then married to Annette Crump from 1998 until the divorce in 2005.
In 2007, he married his third, and current, wife, Dawn Hickey. He now lives in Colorado with his third wife and her daughter.
