Introduction
Mark Kiessling (born February 14, 2000), better known as Jumex (stylized as JUMEX), is an American singer, rapper, songwriter and guitarist from Chicago.
Early life
Born in Brookfield and raised in the countryside, he grew up listening to punk bands like Black Flag and Operation Ivy as well as blues, grunge, psychedelic rock, and emo. He attended Lyons Township high school until his untimely departure, due to medical reasons, involving minor drug use. He cites David Bowie, Yung Lean, and Nirvana as his influences. He now lives in Los Angeles.
Career
Jumex began making music while in high school, where he joined a punk band called No Signal. He took his stage name from the Mexican drink Jumex, a favorite of his and his friends' because it was the only thing they "could afford when he was 12 years old." Visually he cultivates an anime aesthetic. He is a member of the collective Sad Boy Suffer together with sadcrod and idkconundrum.
He released his first single, "Trapped," in late 2018. It went viral with three million streams and eight million views of the music video. His first EP, Loner, was released on June 7, 2019 and included the single "Loner" which netted eight million streams and 7.5 million views in six months. Later in the same year, he released the videos for "Wish Me Death", "Alive In My Coffin" and "Billie Eilish" dedicated to the singer.
Later in 2019, he toured Japan, invited by Japanese metalcore band Crossfaith to share the stage with them as well as Vein and Injury Reserve. In September, he opened for Yungblud at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, and in November performed at the Day N Vegas Festival.
The Joker-inspired video for his song "Spraypaint," released in early October 2019, featured Blink-182's Travis Barker. Jumex's second EP, Lover, was released on November 15, 2019 followed by the videos for "Drugs" in early December and "City In The Snow" on Christmas day.
On February 14, 2020, he released the single "XOXO" which featured American rapper Lil Xan. On the same day, Jumex performed live at TheSubterranean in Chicago. The following month he released the experimental EP Nightmares under the name goodnightm4rk.
