Introduction

John Frederick Smith (1806-1890) was a popular English novelist, who has been called "England's most popular novelist of the mid-nineteenth century". Smith became famous for his serializations in The London Journal. His popular serial Black Bess, or the Knight of the Road,
(1863-1868) was a historical novel with Gothic elements; it revolved around the adventures of Dick Turpin.
