Introduction

John Dennis (born 19 June 1931) is a retired Anglican bishop and former Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. He is currently an honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Winchester.

Education

Dennis was educated at Rutlish School, Merton (where his father taught biology) and St Catharine's College, Cambridge before studying for ordination at Cuddesdon College, Oxford.

Ministry

After curacies in Armley and Kettering he was appointed vicar of the Isle of Dogs in 1962, transferring to John Keble Church, Mill Hill in 1971. After appointment as a prebendary of St Paul’s Cathedral, London in 1977, he became the Bishop of Knaresborough in 1979, and then the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in 1986. He retired to Winchester in 1996.

Personal life

Dennis has two sons, the elder of whom was appointed British Ambassador to Angola in 2014 and the younger is actor and comedian Hugh Dennis.
