Biography
John Desmond Nel (born 10 July 1928 in Cape Town, Cape Province) is a former South African Cricketer who played in six Tests from 1949 to 1957. He played 35 first-class games, top-scoring for his team on several occasions. He then went onto commentating on any matches played at Newlands alongside the greats like Charles Fortune.
He worked as a quantity surveyor. He married Shelagh Mary Finegan (9 February 1952) and has three sons John, Peter and Andrew who live in Cape Town and Durban, South Africa and one daughter, Anne, who now lives in Christchurch, New Zealand. All of his sons went to Rondebosch Junior and High Schools and Anne went to Springfield and St. Mary's Convents.
