Introduction

Isaac Kerlow is an American artist and filmmaker who pioneered the use of visual digital technology. He is considered one of the pioneers of digital art and continues to create with both digital technology and traditional techniques.

He has also written books on computer Animation and effects.

Education

In 1977—1979, Kerlow attended EINA University School of Design and Art of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain, and earned a diploma in Fine Arts. In the following two years, he was at the School of Visual Arts, New York, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Arts and Animation in 1981.

From 1981 to 1983, he attended Pratt Institute, Brooklyn New York, and received his Master's degree in Communication Design.

Career

Currently, Kerlow is an Artist-in-Residence and Principal Investigator at the Earth Observatory of Singapore. Some of his recent projects include Sudden Nature, Mayon: The Volcano Princess with Aida Azlin, Risa Beer(voice), and Yu-Beng Lim(voice), and Earth Girl (video Game.)

Between 1995-2004, Kerlow worked at Disney, in Los Angeles, experimenting with new media in entertainment, moviemaking, animation, and games. In his early academic career, he was the Founding Chairman of the Department of Computer Graphics and Interactive Media at Pratt Institute in New York City, and the youngest full professor ever tenured at that institution.

He is also the Founding Dean and full Professor in the School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

Writings

Kerlow is the author of several best-selling books, including the successful 4th edition of The Art of 3D Computer Animation and Effects (April 2009) published by Wiley. It was translated into Chinese (traditional and simplified), Japanese and Russian.

Kerlow is an active participant in international seminars and festivals. He was Festival Director for the SIGGRAPH 2010 Computer Animation Festival and has been on the Advisory Board of FMX, and the technology committee of the American Society of Cinematographers.

In 2009, he was Artist-in-Residence at Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, China.
