To prepare himself for the filming, Peng took one month to learn how to interact with dolphins from a trained instructor. His dedication to his craft and professionalism was praised by the director. He then starred in the Chinese wuxia drama Chinese Paladin and rose to fame in China. This was followed with another leading role in The Young Warriors, which further raised his popularity.
