Introduction

Alexa Karolinski is a German filmmaker.

Early life and education

Karolinski was born in Berlin, Germany. She received her bachelor's degree in art history. She worked for Vice in Germany as an editorial assistant. She also produced pieces for Arte, featuring the work of various artists. She relocated to New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts. She mastered in social documentary.

Filmmaking career

Karolinski's first major film was Oma & Bella, a documentary about her grandmother and her grandmother's friend and roommate. Both women were Holocaust survivors. The film features the two women cooking and discussing their lives. The film started as a cookbook, with Karolinski wanting to learn how to cook traditional Jewish food. The cookbook was released along with the film.

She has produced photographs and film in partnership with artist Ry Rocklen. She has also worked with Liberty Ross to create a hybrid film for Inhale Magazine.

In 2014, Karolinski entered into a project with Eckhaus Latta. She made films to compliment the fashion house's fashion collection. The films were exhibited at the Museum of Art and Design. The pieces were awarded a prize at the Diane Pernet Fashion Film Festival. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
